Newcastle United supporters have been pretty despondent in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side lose 3-1 at home to Premier League table-toppers Manchester City, thus ending their unbeaten start to 2018.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the division’s runaway leaders having won two and drawn the other of their three matches this year, with victories over Stoke City and Luton Town as well as a draw at home to Swansea City giving our resident Magpies fans some hope heading into the rest of the season. However, the North East giants were unable to maintain their unbeaten run as a Sergio Aguero hat-trick inspired the Citizens to all three points at the Etihad Stadium, with Jacob Murphy’s second goal effort nothing more than a consolation for the visitors.
As such, there have been some deflated Newcastle fans in the Tavern this week, although they are likely to be intrigued and perhaps encouraged by a recent report from The Sun, which suggests that they are ‘preparing’ a bid for Watford striker Troy Deeney.
The 29-year-old has been at Vicarage Road since 2010 and played a huge part in their Championship promotion-winning campaign back in 2015, and he has since done his bit in helping establish the Hornets as a Premier League club.
However, with just eight league starts so far this term and a new manager at the Watford helm, the Englishman’s future has been subject of speculation in recent times, and reports suggest that the Magpies are now ‘preparing’ a bid for the striker ahead of next week’s deadline.
But with time ticking towards January 31, the Magpies will need to act fast if they are to bring the vastly experienced targetman to St James’ Park.
Landlord’s verdict: Troy Deeney has played an integral role in helping establish Watford as a Premier League club in the last few years, but his lack of starts this term suggest that his time at Vicarage Road could be coming to an end.
And for any side battling against the drop this term, the 29-year-old would be an excellent signing – Newcastle United are one team reportedly keen on the Englishman, and are reportedly ‘preparing’ a bid for the striker.
But with time ticking towards Wednesday’s deadline, the Magpies will have to get a move on if they are to bring much-needed attacking reinforcements to St James’ Park.
