Newcastle United must look to use the upcoming transfer window to strengthen their squad with a number of additions, regardless of whether Rafa Benitez is there or not come the end of the season.
And, it appears that they have identified an experienced attacker that could help them move further up the Premier League table.
What’s the News?
According to a claim by Football Insider, Newcastle have set their sights on Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck this summer.
The experienced international is out of contract at the Emirates Stadium at the end of the season and is not expected to be offered a new deal.
However, the Magpies could be in for a battle to land the 28-year-old, as clubs across the continent and Everton closer to home are thought to be keen on the soon-to-be free agent.
Welbeck could be a huge risk for Newcastle to take, however, he could become an excellent addition if they were able to bring him to St. James’ Park this summer.
Still only 28-years-old, although he feels like he has been around forever, he has plenty of experience of playing in the Premier League and could be the type of attacking player that would thrive at the club if given the chance.
The England international is able to find the back of the net and has a solid goal to game ratio, however, it must be said that it could also be a little better. He has featured 126 times for Arenal and scored 32 goals, while at the Red Devils he played 143 times recording 29 goals.
Those figures could make him an inspired signing for Newcastle and one they could hugely benefit having in the squad.
However, on the flipside, he has had a real problem with injuries and that will surely have alarm bells ringing for many. He has been out since November with a broken ankle most recently, but he rarely gets through a full season without picking up knocks that force him to miss significant action.
His wage demands could also be high, which is something Mike Ashley may not be prepared to meet, whilst Newcastle fans will have realised the club appear to get linked with Welbeck on a regular basis (TEAMtalk claimed an ‘exclusive’ last summer).
Whether a deal happens remains to be seen, however, it is one that has all the chances of being a success (or failure).
Newcastle fans, what do you make of the Welbeck links? Would you like to see him at the club in the summer? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
