Newcastle set to complete Salomon Rondon deal with Dwight Gayle departing

Newcastle United have been stepping up a gear in the past week with their transfer activity as the window fast approaches deadline day.

The Magpies have added a number of bodies to their squad already, despite there being an air of frustration with the lack of finances available for Rafa Benitez to spend.

However, those restricted means have meant the Spaniard has had to be wise with his recruitment drive and has seen the likes of Yoshinori Muto (subject to work permit), Florian Schar, Martin Dubravka and Ki Sung-yueng all join permanently, whilst Kenedy has rejoined on a season-long loan.

One area of the pitch that Benitez is still keen on improving is his striking department and it appears that he may finally be able to land a man that he has wanted all summer.

According to a report in The Daily Mail, Newcastle are thought to be close to finalising a deal for West Bromwich Albion’s Salomon Rondon, with a season-long loan looking the most likely outcome.

There are talks with the Baggies about Dwight Gayle heading in the opposite direction, with both players want clauses of a permanent deal being included.

The Verdict:

Rondon would be a smart piece of business for Newcastle to complete this summer as they look to add to their attacking core.

With the addition of Japan international Muto, the Magpies will have an attack that could help to keep Benitez’s side competitive in this year’s Premier League campaign.

The Venezuela international has the experience of playing in the top-flight, and at times had to work hard by himself up top, but with the likes of Kendey running down the wing, he could just be an inspired signing.
