The Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping their club will bring a new central midfield player to St James’ Park this summer to bolster their options in midfield.
Rafa Benitez chopped and changed his central midfield players throughout the entirety of the 2017/18 season, but in the final months of the campaign he rarely deviated from starting Jonjo Shelvey and Mo Diame as his central midfield pairing. Mikel Merino started the campaign in fine form and deservedly earned a permanent move to Newcastle during the early stages of his loan spell, but he fell massively out of favour as the season developed.
Rumours in the British media have linked Merino with a move away from St James’ Park this summer and, if the young Spaniard eventually leaves the club after just one season, Benitez will need to add a new player to his ranks.
With that in mind, Benitez should be keeping his eye on developments at Tottenham Hotspur as the North-London club are interested in signing Tanguy N’Dombele according to L’Equippe in a deal which could be worth €40 million (£35 million).
The France U21 midfielder is widely viewed as the natural successor to Mousa Dembele at Tottenham, and the Lilywhites’ interest suggests that Harry Winks could be available for a season-long loan deal this summer.
With plenty of competition for first-team places in Tottenham’s first-team squad, Mauricio Pochettino may be prepared to allow Winks to leave on loan next season in order to acquire regular first-team football, and Newcastle represents an ideal destination for the England international.
Winks is naturally composed in possession of the ball and a fine athlete who is capable of operating in a box-to-box role, so he would have no problem working his way into Benitez’s first-team plans next season.
Newcastle undoubtedly need to add strength depth to their options this summer with quality talent, and in Winks the Magpies would be welcoming a player who possesses raw potential to become a regular at international level.
Naturally, Tottenham are unlikely to be willing to sell Winks this summer and equally Newcastle would inevitably be priced out of a potential deal, but a loan move should be in the best interests of all parties concerned, so Benitez must do everything in his power to convince Winks to move to the North East if N’Dombele eventually signs for Spurs.
