The Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern have been delighted by the progress made by Ayoze Perez in recent weeks, but they believe further depth is needed in attacking midfield to ensure they avoid a relegation battle next season.
Ayoze Perez was slated by the vast majority of the Newcastle supporters propping up our bar during the first-half of the season, but in recent months he has slowly begun to alter the general consensus amongst the supporters. The Spanish number ten has always been appreciated for his hard-working attitude and willingness to give everything for the club, but his end-product has been lacking at times.
However, that has all changed in recent weeks as Perez has scored 3 goals and provided 3 assists from his previous 10 appearances. Whilst that statistic is far from groundbreaking, it represents a notable improvement on his early season form, but that should not deter Benitez from adding another attacking midfielder to his ranks next season.
Aston Villa will have a stab at winning promotion back to the Premier League this month following a two year absence from the top-flight, and if they fail to achieve promotion then Newcastle should make a bid for their 22-year-old prospect Jack Greaslish (valued at £4.5 million by Transfermarkt). Many predicted a bright future for Grealish when he broke onto the scene at Villa Park just a few years ago, but so far he has failed to realise the full extent of his potential.
A perceived attitude problem and a lack of physical strength appeared to be deterring his progress, but Grealish has matured both mentally and physically following a freak kidney problem which ruled him out of the opening three months of the campaign. Grealish has delighted the Villa supporters since he began playing regularly again and returned to full-fitness, and the quality of his performances suggests he could be ready for a return to the top-flight this summer.
Grealish would provide Benitez with another creative option behind the striker to ensure his side avoid becoming predictable with Perez occupying that position, so if Villa fail to win the play-offs this season, the Magpies would be foolish not to sign him.
