Newcastle United have had a much quieter than expected summer transfer window this time around, with manager Rafa Benitez very much being careful over who he spends his budget on.
The Toon secured the Championship title to give their fans a big boost heading into the Premier League this season, and all eyes will be on them to see if they can maintain their top flight status.
The Newcastle fans here in the Tavern have been delighted with how things have been going in the main though, and our landlord has been sat having a few pints with them in the sun this week discussing potential signings this summer.
One player who our landlord dropped into conversation as someone he thought could do a job at the St James’ is Man United defender Chris Smalling.
The former Fulham man came from nowhere to suddenly be at the top level of the game at Old Trafford, and over the last few seasons has developed into a reliable performer for both club and country.
However, there is a strong feeling that he could be moved on by United manager Jose Mourinho, who is looking to add world class talent to his squad all over the pitch.
This could have an adverse effect on Smalling, but should not put him off a career where he remains in the English top flight.
A move to a huge club like Newcastle could be the ideal sort of break he needs, and with such a passionate crowd roaring him on in the North East, he might just revel in the scenario and rediscover his best form once again.
Toon Army, what do you think? Good signing? Let us know!
