Newcastle United have missed out on the chance to sign Alassane Plea after the player agreed to join Borussia Monchengladbach.
Plea has joined the German outfit from Nice after enjoying a fine campaign in Ligue 1 which saw him find the net on 16 occasions and lay on a further 6 assists for him teammates.
Having missed out on the 25-year-old, Rafa Benitez will be considering alternative options he can bring in to lead the line for Newcastle next season.
During the last campaign, none of the likes of Dwight Gayle, Joselu or Ayoze Perez could get amongst the goals often enough to convince the Toon faithful that an upgrade isn’t needed in that area of the pitch.
The 29-year-old target man has been in blistering form for Sporting Lisbon in recent seasons. 61 goals in 61 league games for the Portuguese outfit tells its own story.
The Dutch forward is valued at £19.8 million by Transfermarkt, and would ordinarily be an extremely ambitious move for Newcastle to make. Sporting Lisbon are not a club in ordinary circumstances though.
Following a raid by fans upon their training base earlier in the year, many of the club’s stars are seeking to terminate their contracts and force moves away. Dost could well be amongst that group.
If Rafa Benitez were able to capitalise on this situation then he’d be bringing exactly the kind of striker he likes to St James’ Park. Tall. Powerful. Technically gifted. Prolific.
Bas Dost has all the attributes to become a hero on Tyneside, and fire the Magpies to Premier League safety once again. If Newcastle are bold enough to make a move to go and get him.
