The Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping their club will break their long-standing transfer record for a top quality centre-forward this summer, and recent reports suggest they will have to do exactly that to secure the services of one of their summer targets.
According to a recent report from TZ, Hoffenheim’s sporting director Alexander Rosen has not so subtly suggested that they have placed a €50 million (£43.9 million) price-tag on the head of the former Leicester City flop Andrej Kramaric. Meanwhile, Goal believe that Newcastle United and Bayern Munich are interested in signing the Croatian this summer, although the price-tag should inevitably deter any forthcoming bids from both sides.
Mike Ashley’s history would suggest that the price quoted is way above what Newcastle’s owner is prepared to spend in the transfer market, so the Magpies are unlikely to table a bid for his services. However, even if Ashley manages to accumulate sufficient funds to tempt Hoffenheim with an offer slightly beneath their asking price, he should avoid trying to lure Kramaric to St James’ due to his suspect history in the Premier League.
The 27-year-old striker joined Leicester in the January transfer window of 2015, but he failed to make an impression with the Foxes before moving to Hoffenheim. With just 4 goals from 20 Leicester appearances, signing Kramaric would represent a grave error of judgement from Newcastle in their search for a prolific goalscorer.
Sure, players have proven in the past that it’s possible to flop with one club and thrive within another, but Newcastle simply cannot afford to take risks of the magnitude which a bid for Kramaric would carry. What Rafa Benitez needs is a proven goalscorer who is capable of playing as a lone striker within his desired system, and unfortunately Kramaric does not fit that description.
Newcastle have to be wise with their limited resources this summer in order to ensure they steer clear of a relegation battle next season, so they must end their interest in Kramaric amid the latest news regarding his price-tag, otherwise they could be set to make a cataclysmic error in the transfer market.
