Newcastle United might be virtually safe from the Premier League drop for another season, however, three points against Southampton on Saturday at St James’ Park will ease any tensions they may have regarding their top-flight status.
Rafa Benitez’s side have managed to put together an excellent run of results recently to help their case and the latest injury news to emerge from the club can be considered to be rather good for the Spaniard and their chances of another victory.
What’s the News?
According to a match preview by BBC Sport, Newcastle have no new injury concerns heading into the potential ‘six-pointer’ with Southampton.
Sean Longstaff and Florian Lejeune will both miss the rest of the season with knee problems, with the former requiring surgery earlier in the week to his ruptured ligaments.
Obviously, the absences of Lejeune and Longstaff are blows for Newcastle to deal with as they have been two of their key players over recent months, however, the fact that they have no new concerns must come as good news to Benitez and his side.
The match against a struggling Southampton side could be the perfect opportunity for the Magpies to reach the 40-point mark and effectively secure their place in the Premier League for another season.
And, if they manage to do that, it could make things easier for the club to try and get Benitez’s future at St James’ Park finally sorted out as it is a saga that has continued to be dragged out for as long as many can remember.
The likes of Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon will be looking to have a say in the game on Saturday, with the former having netted three of Newcastle’s last five goals in the top-flight. Martin Dubravka has been in fine form in between the sticks as well, having kept ten clean sheets, a feat only six other sides have managed to achieve.
