There are some interesting claims in the Football Transfer Tavern this evening from the Daily Star with the paper suggesting that Newcastle United want to sign Arsenal starlet Joel Campbell in the summer.
Campbell has spent the season on-loan with Greek side Olympiacos and he won plaudits in the tavern for his performance against Premier League rivals Manchester United earlier this term, which he capped with a memorable solo goal.
While Arsene Wenger has revealed that he sees the 21-year-old Costa Rican international as part of his squad for the future, it is likely that Campbell will want to be playing first-team football again next season.
Magpies boss Alan Pardew is set to revive his strikeforce in the close season with a move for Campbell while he also understood to be considering Tenerife forward Ayoze Perez.
Perez, 20, may be for sale on the cheap with today’s speculation indicating that a fee of around £2million could be effort to land the impressive young striker.
Today’s reports come on the back of Pardew admitting that he will try to sign at least two strikers this summer.
“At the back end of last year, we struggled for goals and we addressed that by moving Yohan Cabaye up to the No.10 role further up the pitch and getting Loic on loan,” said Pardew.
“Now both those aren’t around so we’re back to where we were.
“We know that in the summer with Cabaye gone and Loic not being our player, these are areas we need to address.
“The owner is under no illusions about that and neither am I.
“Somewhere down the line, we need to get goals and we’re very focused on that.
“But you need a foundation to score goals and our problem at Southampton last week was that we never had that.”
Campbell will be given the stage to impress at the upcoming World Cup where he is expected to impress against England in the group stages.
