Newcastle United boss wants star man out of Arsenal’s grasp

The Football Transfer Tavern sees Arsenal and Newcastle fans locking horns as the Toon Army are desperate to tie down their man, before the Gunners jump in.

According to ITV, Alan Pardew is pushing for his club to hand Cheick Tiote a new deal as they risked losing him in the previous transfer window.

Punters in the Tavern have said for years that Arsene Wenger’s side lacks ‘steel’, and this weakness  has been exposed already this season, and Wenger will know better than anyone else that it is imperative they sign, a midfield hardman who holds Premier League experience.

The 28-year-old Ivorian still is contracted to the club until the 2016-17 season but despite this, that does not stop clubs from knocking on the door, as Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow did in August, with a bid of a mere £4m, which was immediately turned by Newcastle and labelled as ‘derisory’ by the club.

Asked how close he was to losing Tiote in the summer, Pardew said: “We obviously had a team fighting for his services, but the finance was never really in place. The reality was that we were quite comfortable that he wasn’t going to go anywhere.

“I think his contract situation needs to be resolved at the end of the season, for sure.

“I love him. He’s everything that you want in a Newcastle player. He has the quality and of course you’ll never under-estimate the fact that he wants to win – that’s something we have to be very careful about on training days.

“I just love that he’s a winner. It can overcome so many obstacles as a footballer. Young players here need to take a big leaf out of his book in terms of how he approaches training and games.

“Sometimes it can overspill into bookings and sendings-off, but you can never fault him for wanting to win.”
