Newcastle United fans are gathered in the Football Transfer Tavern this afternoon patiently awaiting news of their latest striker pursuit when Massimo Marioni from Metro arrives with news that the club are close to landing both QPR striker Loic Remy and Aston Villa outcast Darren Bent.
Controversial new director of football Joe Kinnear has told Marioni that both strikers could be Magpies players by the end of the week as manager Alan Pardew targets new firepower ahead of the start of the fresh season.
When questioned on the possible signing of the French striker on a season long loan, Kinnear said: “Yeah I think very much, so I would like to think we are very, very close to agreeing that.
“I would think maybe Monday or Tuesday we will be a position to say yea or nay, but I am very happy about how that deal is going at the moment.”
Kinnear then confirmed that discussions are continuing with Villa regarding bringing former Sunderland striker Bent back to the North East, but that they do face competition with Fulham for the England international.
“We were with Darren’s agent for two or three hours, we thrashed out a deal,” he added.
“We are still in negotiations with Aston Villa so there is a really strong possibility there.
“Again I hear the latest is that somebody else has all of a sudden shown interest in the player so we have competition from various clubs around the country, but I am not letting go.
“These are players that me and Alan [Pardew] have spoken about. These are players that we’ve all agreed at the club are the type of player we want to bring to Newcastle.”
