Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United have been tipped to sign Manchester United defender Brandon Williams.
Former player Noel Whelan has recently backed Newcastle to sign Williams from Man Utd, describing him to be a ‘smart signing’ for the Magpies.
Would Williams be a smart signing for Newcastle?
Newcastle could be a ‘massive opportunity’ for Williams
Whelan was recently talking to Football Insider and he talked about why the Magpies should sign Williams this month. He believes that the Englishman could be looking to move to Newcastle since it presents a ‘massive opportunity’ for him. He feels that getting Williams would be a ‘shrewd’ move for Bruce’s side and that the player has some grit and tenacity in him.
While talking about the English defender, Whelan said:
“I think he would be a smart signing. He is one of these players who has been brought through the ranks at Manchester United in the right way. He has that little bit of grit and tenacity about him and you want that in a player.
“I am sure he would be going to Newcastle, seeing it as a massive opportunity. It could be a loan with a view to a permanent if he impresses because he has quite a few players ahead of him at Man United.
“I think that could be a really shrewd signing from Steve Bruce. He is a good young player with an exciting future.”
Williams has been linked with a move to St. James’ Park in recent weeks. More recently, it was reported that the Magpies have agreed a framework for a potential January move for the Man Utd defender and that they were leading the race for him too, Southampton are also said to be interested in him.
It has also been reported that Williams has been told that he can leave Old Trafford on a temporary basis.
Williams would add depth at Newcastle
Williams is capable of playing at left-back, but he can also play in the right-back position. Having said that, the Magpies have at least three options for the left-back spot. They also have a total of three options for the right-back position (as per Transfermarkt).
But Williams is still only 20 and he would add extra depth to the squad. As Whelan said, he does have tenacity and he would bring that to the table, which might be a good thing for a side seemingly lacking in a bit of confidence. Signing him on a temporary basis won’t do Newcastle any harm at all.
