Newcastle United blew an opportunity pull away from the relegation spots this season, after being held at St James’ Park by bottom side, Swansea City.
Fans here in The Transfer Tavern watched with disappointment as the final whistle was blown and the points were shared, and were quick to vent their frustration to our landlord at the bar when picking up their next round of drinks. Additions are needed at the club if they are to avoid the drop this season, but breaking reports today in The Northern Echo have suggested that a key transfer target has slipped away, with Chelsea’s Kenedy set to remain at Stamford Bridge.
The Magpies had been strongly linked with a move for the Brazilian, but The Northern Echo has now reported that manager Rafa Benitez’s pursuit has been in vain. Conte is now set to name Kenedy in his starting lineup for Wednesday’s FA Cup replay against Norwich City at Stamford Bridge, leaving Rafa floundering with just two weeks remaining of the winter window.
Landlord’s Verdict: Oh dear, Newcastle fans. Having been so strongly linked with the player and a lot of time invested in acquiring his signature, this deal now appears dead in the water.
Newcastle’s winter activity has been non-existent so far, and Rafa must be growing increasingly frustrated in his side’s ability to bring players into the club to aid their relegation battle. If the Magpies don’t get moving soon, it would be no surprise to see no new faces arrive at St James’ Park this month.
