Our resident Newcastle United supporters have been surprised to hear that manager Rafa Benitez has told Sylvain Marveaux and Gabriel Obertan that they are no longer needed.
Both of the Frenchmen’s contracts were set to expire at the end of the season but The Newcastle Chronicle believe that Benitez has released them early.
Attacking midfielder Marveaux has been at St James’ Park for five years, though he has not featured for the Magpies since early 2014. The 30-year-old spent last season on loan in his native France with Guingamp.
Meanwhile former Manchester United winger Obertan did start the first three league fixtures this campaign before being he suffered from a hamstring injury.
The 27-year-old has also spent five years with Newcastle but he has been very underwhelming, managing just three goals in that time.
Our landlord has also voiced his opinion, claiming that neither player will be missed by the Newcastle fans here in the Tavern.
Newcastle fans, was it the right decision to release these two players? Let us know in the comments below!
