After managing to string three consecutive Premier League wins together following a poor start to the season, Newcastle United were brought back down to earth when West Ham beat them 3-0 at St. James’ Park on Saturday.
Since then, however, there has been a positive development for the Magpies with midfielder Sean Longstaff putting pen to paper on a new four-year contract.
The 21-year-old Newcastle youth product has yet to appear for Rafael Benitez’s side in the Premier League this season, but many including his Spanish boss are expecting big things from him in the future.
“I’m really pleased with the extension because we have seen from the first training session that Sean is a young lad with great potential,” Benitez told Newcastle’s official club website. “He is keen to learn, he is a hard worker and he has the quality and the talent to become a good player. I’m sure our fans will appreciate seeing that from a local lad.”
Looking at Benitez’s words and Newcastle’s current midfield options in the senior squad, there is no reason why Longstaff cannot come in now and potentially make an impact.
Take a look at what Newcastle supporters are saying on the midfielder’s new contract below…

Longstaff appears to be ahead of Hayden in the pecking order now.
Chosen over Hayden on Saturday for midfielder spot on bench.
Hayden will 100% be away in either January or Summer.#NUFC
