Newcastle United are said to be keeping tabs on Milton Keynes Dons ‘starlet’ Matthew Sorinola.
This claim has emerged via TEAMtalk, who have reported that the Toon, amongst ‘a host of clubs’ including fellow Premier League sides Leeds United, West Ham United, West Bromwich Albion, Crystal Palace and Burnley, ‘have checked on’ the 19-year-old left-back, who has ‘made a big impression’ in the 2020/21 campaign.
How has Sorinola impressed this term?
Sorinola made his first-team debut for MK Dons last season in the EFL Trophy, however, his role in Russell Martin’s side has grown this term, with Sorinola having appeared in 17 of MK Dons’ 24 competitive fixtures at this stage of the 2020/21 campaign.
Despite being the second-youngest player in MK Dons’ senior squad at present, only five players have made more first-team appearances than the 19-year-old has so far this term, which may indicate how important he has become for his club.
Per TEAMtalk, this growing importance evidently hasn’t gone unnoticed, with scouts of several clubs, including the Toon, reportedly ‘impressed with his progress.’
Where could Sorinola fit in at Newcastle United?
It remains to be seen whether or not the Toon, or any other potentially interested party, actually end up acting on their alleged interest in the left-back and it certainly seems as though there will be plenty of competition for his signature.
As a result, perhaps it would be fair to question if Sorinola would even view a move to the North East club as being the right one for him, especially as Newcastle United have got as many as four recognised left-backs in their first-team squad at present, including 22-year-old Jamal Lewis, who, given his age, seemingly represents a long-term option at the position.
With that in mind, maybe another club would be more determined to secure the teenager’s signature and with Sorinola seemingly not short of potential options if the opportunity to move on from MK Dons does present itself, maybe he’d prefer to join a club where more senior game time is likely to be on offer, though it’s still unclear exactly how much the Toon want to sign the player.
Would Sorinola be a good signing for Newcastle?
