Newcastle United have been extremely slow in their winter transfer window, with manager Rafa Benitez waiting on the board to sanction moves for his key targets this month.
Fans here in The Transfer Tavern are growing increasingly nervous with the end of the window fast approaching, and are desperate to see Rafa given a free reign to bring in his men in the coming weeks. Our landlord sat down to talk targets with the Geordie bunch over a couple of afternoon pints, but as fans revealed their dream targets, Sky Sports revealed on their Transfer Centre ticker at 11:34 that Liverpool pair Daniel Sturridge and Danny Ings were on Rafa’s personal list, along with West Ham United’s Diafra Sakho.
The trio are all being lined up for potential loan switches to St James’ Park, with each player out of favour at their current clubs. Sturridge is likely to be at the top of the list given his record in recent years, and many will wonder why the player is not being afforded an opportunity under Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.
Landlord’s Verdict: If Newcastle can secure even one of these three, they will be in with an excellent chance of securing Premier League football for another season. A fit Daniel Sturridge would be the dream signing, but with Inter Milan also sniffing around, the Magpies may settle for Ings or Sakho.
Ings is coming back from a long-term injury so could be a risk, but Sakho is the type of player who would thrive in the north east. A strong, powerful forward, the player could have an impact at the club similar to the likes of Papiss Cisse, and would certainly become a fan favourite should he link up with the club. This deal seems the most likely, unless Hammers boss David Moyes wish to only allow the player to leave on a permanent basis.
