The Sun have an interesting claim for us here in the Football Transfer Tavern as they think that Newcastle United are leading the race for Aston Villa striker Darren Bent.
The former Ipswich Town, Tottenham and Sunderland forward has of course been on the sidelines for the majority of his time at Aston Villa through a combination of injury and just not being wanted by Paul Lambert and now it seems he will finally get his move away from the club.
One thing that has never been in doubt when it comes to Bent is his ability and we all know that the England international can bang in the goals.
To be put up for sale at a figure of £5 million is quite frankly a steal and as one of our punters quips, we don’t blame Alan Pardew or indeed Joe Kinnear for swooping and making a move for the forward.
The Magpies are still looking for a top striker after selling Demba Ba to Chelsea in January and could well have found one in Bent who will want to impress as much as possible in the season before the World Cup in 2014.
In other good news for Newcastle, the club seem to have finally resolved their row with their Muslim contingent over the Wonga shirt sponsors and are looking united as pre-season begins.
Will Bent adorn the famous black and white stripes of Newcastle this season? Let us know your thoughts below.
