It’s been a busy day in the Football Transfer Tavern for Newcastle United followers and now Jamie Sanderson from Metro indicates that the Magpies have began talks with Lyon as they try to bring striker Bafetimbi Gomis to St. James’ Park.
The French forward has been outlined as a possible £7 million replacement for Papiss Cisse whose days in the North East look numbered after he refused to play for the club due to their new sponsorship with controversial high interest loan company Wonga.
A meeting at the PFA with the club proved inconclusive with Cisse insisting that religion says he can’t wear the shirt and now Alan Pardew has turned his attentions to finding an able replacement for the 28-year-old striker.
Aston Villa striker Darren Bent and QPR’s Loic Remy have both been targeted but Gomis is thought to be the prime target for Pardew.
Lyon have already confirmed that Newcastle have shown some interest in Gomis and it now understood that discussions have started that could see the striker moving to the Premier League.
Swansea City were following his progress earlier in the transfer window before they landed top target Wilfried Bony from Vitesse Arnhem but Gomis is still determined to try his hand in the Premier League.
Newcastle hope to make at least £10 million from transfer of Cisse with Anzhi Makhachkala, CSKA Moscow and Zenit St Petersburg are all watching his situation, while Italian outfit Inter Milan are also reportedly admirers.
