Newcastle United plotting controversial swoop for Sunderland defender

The Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern are goading the Sunderland fans in the other corner.

“Sunderland’s going down and the Mags are going up”, sing the Newcastle fans by the bar.

Newcastle United have booked their place in next season’s Premier League and their bitter rivals Sunderland are set to spend next year in the Championship after being relegated officially last week.

And there could be even more to gloat about for Newcastle fans as they plot a controversial swoop for Sunderland defender Bryan Oviedo, according to reports in the Honduran media.

Diez, a media outlet from Honduras, is claiming that Newcastle United want to sign Bryan Oviedo to solve their left back problem.

The Costa Rica international joined Sunderland from Premier League side Everton in January but could be set to cross the divide and join Newcastle in the summer.

Left back is one of the positions that Rafa Benitez is keen to bolster to provide competition for Paul Dummett this summer.

Bryan Oviedo is a shock target but he has plenty of Premier League experience and he can also play as a right back or a winger.

The 27-year-old still has a contract until 2020 so Newcastle would need to offer a tempting fee to prise him away from their local rivals.
