Our resident Newcastle United fans have been impressed with their transfer window so far and have been delighted to hear that their board have the permission of owner Mike Ashley to break the club’s transfer record this month.
Recent media speculation indicates that manager Steve McClaren is looking recruit additional attacking outlets, including a striker and a winger, following the acquisitions of Jonjo Shelvey and Henri Saivet.
It is reported that the Magpies are taking a serious look at two English players in the form of Tottenham Hotspur’s Andros Townsend and West Bromwich Albion’s Saido Berahino, with both having been linked with moves away from their respective clubs.
With McClaren desperate to bring a new forward to St. James’ Park, Newcastle are expected to be asked to shell out more than £18million on Berahino, with Spurs also looking to sign the striker. Should this happen, the England Under-21 international would surpass the Magpies’ previous transfer record of £16million which was paid for Michael Owen back in 2005.
Berahino has had problems at West Brom this season after claiming last summer that he would never play for the Hawthorns club again and he has not always got on with coach Tony Pulis, who recently stated that any player is for sale ‘if the price is right’.
A move away from West Brom seems to be a case of when, not if, with the only question ultimately about his preferred destination.
Meanwhile, Spurs are looking for a fee in excess of £14million for winger Townsend, whilst a short-term loan deal with a view to a permanent switch has also been discussed.
Newcastle fans, would you prepared to spend big money on Townsend and Berahino as you look to avoid being relegated? Let us know in the comments below!
