Ryan Manning has been in sensational form for QPR this season after their impressive start to the campaign, and now Newcastle United are taking notice.
According to a report from Football Insider, Steve Bruce sent scouts to watch the defender at Elland Road during QPR’s 2-0 away defeat, with a potential January move on the cards as they look to shore up their backline.
Manning would most likely be signed as a backup to Jetro Willems on Tyneside, but the converted full-back could most certainly push for a starting place given his impressive form – scoring a goal and registering three assists in the Championship this season.
QPR boss Mark Warburton would undoubtedly prefer to keep hold of the 23-year-old, with a potential promotion push not out of reach judging by the London side’s unexpected climb to within reach of the play-off places.
Warburton, as quoted by the Newcastle Chronicle [09:06], takes the rumours as a compliment, responding to a question about the Magpies scouting his rising star.
“Ryan’s been playing well, and it’s part and parcel of the game that there’ll be speculation about a player who’s performing well,” explained the former Rangers boss.
“It doesn’t bother me, and I know Ryan’s happy here and knows he has to stay fully focused.
“In many ways, the more speculation there is about players, the better. It means they’re doing well.”
He isn’t lying about Manning ‘doing well’ either, as he averages a whopping 2.2 key passes per game, per Whoscored.
Indeed, if the manager is this relaxed about the rumours, could it be likely that he isn’t worried about losing Manning to the Magpies?
Well, with the defender’s contract up in the summer, it would reportedly cost Bruce’s side £2-3m to acquire his signature in January – so QPR can either let him go for that fee or try to tie him down to a new contract if they are to profit off Newcastle’s interest.
Should Newcastle sign Jetro Willems permanently?
