Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern are laughing at Sunderland fans across the bar after signing defender Javier Manquillo on four-year deal.
The Spain Under-21 full-back played 22 times on loan for Sunderland during the last campaign before returning to parent club Atletico Madrid this summer.
However, it wasn’t long before Newcastle hinted there interest and subsequently have gone on to sign the defender.
Not only is he familiar in the Premier League due to his Sunderland connections, but he also played 19 times for Liverpool during the 2014-15 season on loan from Atletico.
“I’m very happy to be here. From the first moment that Rafa Benitez called me, I just knew that I had to come here, to such a big club,” Manquillo said.
“I’m very happy with the challenge ahead. I’ve come here to work hard and give everything on and off the pitch. Hopefully then everything will go in the right direction.”
While Newcastle and Sunderland fans continue to bicker back and forth at the bar, the resounding impression coming from punters is that he was a flop at the Stadium of Light last year.
He was part of a defence which finished bottom of the league and conceded 69 goals in the process.
Nevertheless, Benitez seems very happy with the signing.
“He can play both sides of the defence and he has a lot of motivation because he knows he has a point to prove,” the Newcastle boss said.
“He can still improve but he has played for Spain at Under-21 level and that is because he is a good player, so hopefully he will show that form here.”
What do you think, Newcastle supporters? Is this a good signing?
