The Newcastle United fans are gathered at the bar drowning their sorrows in The Transfer Tavern this evening, discussing reports that the club would still have to pay one of their midfielder’s his Premier League wages, even if they drop down to the Championship.
The Telegraph is reporting that Jonjo Shelvey will still recieve £80,000 a week due to the failure of an insertion in his contract upon signing of a wage cut, should the club be relegated from the Premier League.
Shelvey joined Newcastle in January from Swansea City on five-and-a-half year deal, and with the club in real danger of going down, it could see the club in severe financial trouble, especially with other players having no clause in their deals with the club.
Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has urged owner Mike Ashley to review the way the club is run.
The Newcastle fans in The Tavern feel that they have nothing to worry about with regards to the high earners at the club as they see the club looking to sell them, should they find themselves playing Championship football next season.
Meanwhile, our landlord feels this would be a ludicrous amount of money to fork out on a player every week!
