Newcastle United should have swooped on Chelsea for this international midfielder

Newcastle United finished the transfer window with some elements of joy, with Mike Ashley finally bringing some new players in for manager Rafa Benitez to work with.

The Magpies finished tenth last season, but got their season underway with a loss against Spurs at St James’ Park, and once again some fans are calling for more backing from the owners.

All eyes will now turn to January for the Toon Army, with the fans hoping new signings will be on their way in the winter, and one player we in the Tavern think would be a superb addition is Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley.

The £22.5m-rated midfielder has struggled to adapt since moving to London, but did start the first game of the season for the Blues.

However, in the summer, it was very probable that Barkley could have been allowed to leave the Bridge, and Newcastle might well have missed a trick not bringing in the former Everton man.

There is little to doubt he has the ability to make an impact in the Premier League, and a move to the North East might well have been what he needed.

Barkley has all the ability in the world to become a top Premier League midfielder, he just needs opportunities, and he could well have thrived at a club like Newcastle had they seized the moment and tried to sign the England man.

Newcastle fans, what do you think? Agree? Let us know in the comments!
