Newcastle fans look smug in the Football Transfer Tavern as it is revealed that one of their summer signings opted for St James’ Park, instead of signing for a different Premier League club.
According to The Sentinel, Stoke boss Mark Hughes has revealed that he attempted to sign striker Emmanuel Riviere in the summer but he favoured a move to the Toon.
The striker is set to line up against Stoke on Monday night, in their Premier League clash, but the only advantage for Stoke is that Hughes will have done heavy research on the Frenchman and will be very aware of his strengths and weaknesses.
Although the Potters look transformed under their new boss and they have signed some very talented players, the 24-year-old would of been a fantastic acquisition for the Hughes, giving him even more fire power up front.
Hughes said: “We certainly had an interest and had conversations with people close to him.
“There was an indication he might be available this summer, so we pursued it to a certain extent.
“But you need enthusiasm from the other side and maybe we didn’t see that. Maybe their thinking was they were looking at other clubs rather than ourselves.”
Newcastle fans. Although things are not going as you would have liked this season, do you see Emmanuel Riviere as a glimmer of hope? Let us know your thoughts below.
