Newcastle midfielder Matthew Longstaff burst onto the scene with a crucial winning goal against Manchester United at St. James’ Park – with Steve Bruce hinting he could start again at the weekend against Chelsea.
The 19-year-old severely impressed on his home debut, with some pundits praising his performance alongside brother and fellow midfielder Sean Longstaff.
Following that noteworthy partnership in the centre of the park, the Newcastle manager has since hinted supporters could see the same on Saturday.
Repeating the heroics from two weeks ago will be no easy feat, with Chelsea improving their form under Frank Lampard with three wins out of their last five in the league.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference (via club’s official website), Bruce stated: “From day one, he’s been knocking on the door, and it was always a case of ‘when do I put him in?’
“The circumstances were right. Man United live on the TV was all about him. Since I joined up with the squad in China he’s the one who has constantly performed well in training, and his enthusiasm for it is there for everybody to see, so he deserved his chance.
“It brought a refreshing humility to us all again, and it was a wonderful debut from the kid. The big thing now is to try and help him, protect him, and nurture him along the way because he’s got a big, big future ahead of him – but what a great start.”
In comparison to Chelsea’s recent form, bar the incredible home performance against the Red Devils, Newcastle have picked up three points on just one other occasion – a 1-0 away win to Spurs in late August.
Indeed, with Longstaff or not, Saturday’s clash will provide a difficult test for Bruce’s men.
In eight-goal Tammy Abraham, the Blues have the Premier League’s joint top goalscorer. And behind him, England international Mason Mount, who has also been among the goals this term, does not look too shabby either.
Which brother can go further in the game?
