Newcastle United supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating their side’s movements in the summer transfer window, what with additions clearly needed for their team to build upon their tenth place finish in the Premier League.
Rafa Benitez’s men deserve great credit for securing a top-half finish upon their return to the top-flight, with the Magpies ending up with 44 points from their 38 league games in their first season back following promotion. But for the North East heavyweights to improve again next time round, and possibly challenge for the European spots, reinforcements will certainly be needed over the summer to enable Benitez to build the squad to compete in the top half of the table.
As such, the attentions of our resident Magpies supporters are very much focused on potential summer signings, which is why they are likely to be intrigued by recent reports linking their club with a move for Porto winger Yacine Brahimi.
And were owner Mike Ashley to indeed secure a deal for the £22.5 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) this summer, it may just convince Benitez that his long-term future is at St James’ Park.
Ultimately, the Spaniard has been noticeably disappointed with the club’s transfer policy throughout his time in charge of Newcastle, to the point that the former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager was afforded just three loan signings during the January window.
And while between those three (albeit mainly Kenedy and Martin Dubravka), the Magpies were able to avoid the drop, they may not be so lucky next time, with Benitez likely hoping for serious investment this summer to take the club back to its previous lofty heights.
And with vacancies appearing around the Premier League, our resident Newcastle fans are somewhat concerned that the 58-year-old could leave this summer, although were Ashley to fund Brahimi’s arrival, that would surely go some way to convincing the Spaniard of the Magpies’ ambition and potential for the future.
The 28-year-old has enjoyed another fine season for Porto in netting 12 goals and laying on ten assists to help them win the Primeira Liga title, thus taking his overall tallies to 41 goals and 34 assists in 166 appearances for the club.
And with at least seven goals in each of his four seasons at the Portuguese heavyweights, the Algeria international is a winger who also scores and indeed creates, and as such would add a great deal of quality to a Newcastle front line that weren’t always at their creative best over the course of the season.
Significantly though, it would appear that it will take a sizable sum of money to lure Brahimi to St James’ Park, with reports suggesting that he has a release clause in his contract of €60 million (£52.6 million).
And while he only has 12 months left on that deal, and as such it’s unlikely that Newcastle will have to match that figure, it will still need to be a significant sum of money to lure the Algerian star to St James’, and thus smash their current transfer record (the £16 million they paid for Michael Owen back in 2005).
And while money isn’t necessarily everything, the ambition and determination the club would show in landing Brahimi would surely go some way to convincing Benitez that he will be able to mould the squad he wants at Newcastle, and thus stay there for the long-term to take the club back to its previous successes.
Thus, were Ashley to indeed bring Brahimi to the North East, it would surely represent the sort of ambitious signing that might just keep the Spaniard at St James’ for the long term.
