Newcastle United look set to remain in the Premier League this season after turning their fortunes around, and fans in the Transfer Tavern will no doubt be celebrating their achievements.
The Magpies, although not mathematically safe, look to have assured a place in the top-flight for another year, having picked up more points than anyone but the top four sides since the turn of 2018 – they are now looking for a top-10 finish.
Manager Rafa Benitez has worked hard with his squad, which is evidently showing, and the locals in the bar will be wanting him to sign a new deal at the club to remain for a number of years. One significant thing the Spaniard did was bring in a number of key loan signings in January, which has helped them become a team to be reckoned with.
The loan signings – Kenedy joined from Chelsea, Martin Dubravka arrived from Sparta Prague and Islam Slimani came from Leicester City – look to have made a significant impact and Matt Ritchie, who himself has had an impressive campaign, admits they have been great signings.
He told The Newcastle Chronicle: ‘There’s no better thing than bringing players in to add competition.
‘It makes everyone raise their game. Whether it’s a centre-half or a winger or a striker, it doesn’t matter.
‘If there’s a new player, you want respect from your peers, and it brings the levels up in training and brings the levels up on game day. It just adds that extra bit, and I think it’s made a big difference.’
And these comments are sure to intrigue our resident Magpies fans, several of whom have seen a marked improvement in their team in 2018, with many hopeful for even better things to come in the 2018/19 season.
Landlord’s Verdict: Newcastle fans in the Tavern will no doubt be delighted with how their team has performed and will be pleased that they will remain in the Premier League next season.
The locals in the bar will echo the thoughts of Ritchie, and they will undoubtedly be hoping that they can keep a number of their loan stars on a permanent deal next year.
