A positive turning point for Rafa Benitez and Newcastle United looks to be on the horizon

There’s been an interesting turn of events at Newcastle United, where manager Rafa Benitez recently looked to be in a moral standoff with owner Mike Ashley. However, after defeating Manchester City and breaking their transfer record with Miguel Almiron’s signing, things look much sunnier at Tyneside.

There’s even talks going on about the Spaniard signing an extension. According to the Mirror, Ashley expects him to now sign a three-year contract.  After getting his wishes fulfilled, Benitez could ponder committing his future at Newcastle.

However, in order to achieve bigger success than just merely avoiding relegation to the Championship, a broader plan needs to be drawn up. Benitez needs Ashley to spend again in the summer, mainly from the profits derived from this season. The Magpies require better defenders and to make Salomon Rondon’s loan permanent.

While Benitez is slowly churning out results thanks to his clinical attacking men, he needs to work on his defensive end. If the Magpies keep leaking goals, they’ll remain stuck at the bottom. However, knowing his experience and man-management skills, Benitez could do wonders with a refined Newcastle unit next season.

The Magpies have history on their side and Benitez will aim to bring back the Newcastle of old, even targetting a European-placed finish next season. If Ashley keeps giving Benitez what he wants, he can slowly but surely build up a formidable side, which can not only make St. James Park an impenetrable fortress but again become a tough nut to crack in the Premier League.

If Mike Ashley is right and the former Liverpool coach does extend his stay in charge on Tyneside, the Toon Army can finally dream of better times. They deserve it.
