The Newcastle United fans here in the Transfer Tavern were delighted to see Kenedy arrive and finally give Rafa Benitez a boost in the January market, though are now quickly praying for more. Indeed, with the Premier League survival far from assured, our resident Geordies hope Mike Ashley puts his hand in his pocket.
With that in mind, reports to have emerged from the Daily Mirror have proven really rather interesting. They claim the Magpies are keen on a big move for Leicester City striker, Islam Slimani, in an attempt to bolster their frontline as Benitez battles to keep his side in the league.
Goals have been hard to come by this season for the Toon Army, who’ve largely had to rely on either Joselu or Dwight Gaye to spearhead their attack, with both proving rather ineffective. In desperate need of a marquee marksman, the Foxes’ club-record man is understood to be of interest.
Despite signing for around £29m in the summer of 2016, the former Sporting Lisbon star has struggled for a regular starting berth at the King Power Stadium and is reportedly available for £20m. That’d be a club-record for Newcastle too, though he’d be a massive upgrade on their current options.
Slimani would be huge for Newcastle United. Able to lead the line, the Algerian would give Benitez a dynamic option in the final third at long, long last, much to the delight of our resident Geordies.
As you can imagine, they’d love to see him arrive at St. James’ Park.
