The Newcastle United fans here in the Transfer Tavern have been absolutely delighted about the recent talk of a takeover for the club. Indeed, our punters here clad in black and white cannot stop dreaming about life under a wealthy backer.
Still, their collective minds were distracted yesterday following comments made by former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan made on Sky Sports’ The Debate. Speaking about a potential take over at St. James’ Park, Jordan claimed Mike Ashley was ‘never going to be accepted because he was a southerner’.

Many of the Magpies in our bar believe that’s a myth, with club legend Alan Shearer voicing his thoughts on social media. Talking about the clip, Shearer described it as ‘BS’ and named Rob Lee and Les Ferdinand as those from southern parts of the country, who were loved by Newcastle faithful.
Mike Ashley wasn’t not accepted because he was southern. Mike Ashley wasn’t accepted because he failed to put enough money into the club, leading to two relegations under his watch.
Wherever Newcastle’s next owner is from won’t matter, it’s whether or not they stump up the cash.
