Newcastle United fans here in the Tavern are hopeful that their side can recreate the magic of yesteryear, as a possible relegation back to the Championship is in the offing for the Magpies.
Rafa Benitez hasn’t been blessed with the greatest of backing since gaining promotion back to the Premier League, as a ‘Championship’ level squad and transfer window deficiencies have caused for desperate times on Tyneside. But, if there’s anyone that Newcastle United fans will listen to then it’s their all-time leading scorer Alan Shearer, but even he shares a vision that not many of the Toon Army will be fond of. Indeed, according to reports in The Sun, the Newcastle legend has predicted the club will stay up this season because they have Rafa Benitez, but he will quit at the end of the current campaign.
Of course, avoiding relegation is the main aim for both Benitez and Newcastle United fans, with a dream to live another day in the Premier League. But, losing out on one of the world’s most established managers at the end of the season could be another huge mistake to add to a growing list from this season’s disasters.
And, with an incredible 148 goals to his name and endless admiration for his beloved Newcastle United, how residents here would love to see Shearer take the unwanted Mike Ashley’s place as owner of the club.
Nevertheless, if you’re willing to put your trust in the cult-hero then relegation is a thing of the past for the Magpies, as Shearer went on to describe exactly how he believes the season will pan out:
“We are staying up. Just! It will be tight and may even come down to goal difference but I firmly believe we will do it.”
“But more crucially, we have a top class manager in Rafa Benitez.”
“Someone whose love of the Newcastle fans has kept him at the club through a tough time.”
“He will not desert the ship and let it sink but nobody could blame him given the lack of support he has had from the helm.”
“Newcastle should be bigger and better than this but under Ashley we never will be.”
“Unfortunately Benitez recognises it too and we will probably lose him at the end of the season.”
“Another huge chance has been missed.”
Alan Shearer has hit the nail on the head, with any other manager in charge of Newcastle United in this current moment they would have probably already crumbled under the pressure. But, with an experienced and established manager in Benitez at the helm, it’s frustrating to see what could have been if the stubbornness of Mike Ashley wasn’t a thing. However, due to all the difficulties that the Spaniard has faced both in transfers and with getting his own way at St James’ Park, a departure in the summer is looking very likely.
