Newcastle United supporters have been pretty despondent in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side lose 2-1 at Watford on Saturday to suffer a third straight Premier League defeat.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their meeting with the Hornets off the back of losses against West Brom and Everton, results which stunted their momentum after a run of four successive league victories. Yet they were unable to return to winning ways on Saturday as goals from Roberto Pereyra and Andre Gray were enough to seal the three points for Javi Gracia’s side, with Ayoze Perez getting one back for the Magpies after the break but ultimately to no avail.
Consequently, there have been several disappointed Newcastle fans in the Tavern in the last few days, many of whom are hoping their team can get something from their final two games against Tottenham and Chelsea to finish an ultimately successful season on a high.
Yet several of our resident Magpies supporters are already looking ahead to what business their side may seek to conduct in the summer, with many hoping that their side can indeed seal a deal for Fulham’s Tom Cairney, having been linked with him in recent times.
Not only would the £13.5 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) bring genuine quality to the attacking ranks, but his arrival may also get the best out of Perez, who has performed solidly at times this term but ultimately not on a consistent enough basis.
The Spaniard is the club’s top-scorer so far this season with eight goals in all competitions for Benitez’s side, with the 24-year-old adding four assists as well in an overall decent campaign.
However, if the Magpies are serious about moving to the next level in the years to come, they will be expecting and indeed demanding more from their number ten, who continues to provide just as much defensively as he does going forward.
And Cairney’s arrival this summer would serve to do just that, not only as the Fulham ace may well get the nod ahead of Perez, but significantly because Perez would have genuine competition for that position in the team, and as such would simply have to perform at a higher level.
Throughout his Newcastle career, the 24-year-old has produced some brilliant moments and threatened to go on and become a quality player – he just needs the consistency in his performances to do that.
And having someone as adept and talented as Cairney at the club could serve to bring the best out of the Spaniard, as failure to do so could see him axed from the team, and thus see him spend the season on the substitute’s bench.
Ultimately, competition is always healthy in any area of the pitch, and it’s arguable that Perez hasn’t really had that in his position this season – some of his displays merit selection, but some simply haven’t.
Having Cairney at the club though, were he to join this summer, could serve to bring the best out of the Spaniard, and as such our resident Newcastle fans may see more of the recent Perez performances on a more consistent basis during the 2018/19 season.
