Newcastle United supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the 2018/19 Premier League season, what with their team seeking to build upon their tenth place finish last time round.
Rafa Benitez’s men deserve great credit for securing a top half finish upon their return to English football’s top-flight, especially given they spent little in the way of money to improve the squad in the recent transfer windows. However, for the North East giants to move forward and possibly return to their former glories, it’s clear that reinforcements will be needed in certain areas of the squad during the close season.
Nonetheless, there are many excited Magpies supporters in the Tavern at present, several of whom are likely to be interested by recent reports linking their club with a move for Mario Gotze, scorer of the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final.
And were the £16.2 million-rated attacking ace (as per Transfermarkt) to indeed make the move to St James’ Park, it could spell seriously bad news for current Toon forward Ayoze Perez.
Ultimately, the Spaniard did enjoy a decent season last time round in scoring ten goals and laying on four assists in all competitions for the Magpies, eventually finishing the campaign as the club’s top-scorer.
And while he deserves a lot of credit for finishing the season strongly, many of our resident Newcastle fans feel that he still doesn’t offer enough in that number ten role, with several concerned that he is too pre-occupied with fulfilling defensive duties.
And if the North East heavyweights are serious about moving to the next level under Benitez, and potentially challenging for the European spots this season, they need someone with more attacking intent and creativity in that number ten role – Gotze could be that man.
Yes, the Borussia Dortmund ace has struggled for form in the last few years, for one reason or another, but one mustn’t forget that the 26-year-old excelled in his first spell at Dortmund to earn a move to fellow German giants Bayern Munich, for whom he also impressed with 36 goals and 24 assists in 114 appearances.
And were he able to re-discover that form in the black-and-white of Newcastle, Benitez would have a very special player in his ranks, and one that would almost certainly keep Perez out of the side.
Thus, with the two likely to be vying for the same position in the starting eleven, it’s difficult to see how Perez would force his way into the side ahead of German World Cup winner Gotze, which is why landing the latter could spell seriously bad news for the Newcastle attacker.
