With Newcastle United not spending vast sums in this window, it is time for some long-standing players to stand up and show what they can do.
Rafa Benitez has added to his squad with some solid additions considering his lack of spending. He has utilised the loan market to bring in Salomon Rondon from West Bromwich Albion and Kenedy from Chelsea. Two attack-minded acquisitions who will make the Magpies more of a threat going forward this season. Last season’s success of a tenth-placed Premier League finish was based mainly of defensive solidity.
The Spanish boss has also spent fees on defender Fabian Schar and Martin Dubravka, which look to be pretty good deals. Meanwhile, Benitez has also secured Ki Sung-yeung on a free transfer from Swansea City.
So there is decent resources available to Rafa Benitez this season despite his restricted spending. He needs a forward player to step up to the plate and show what they can do, Ayoze Perez needs to prove he can be the main man at St James Park this season.
The 25-year-old Spaniard has never struck more than eight Premier League goals in a single season. If Perez could be more clinical and get this figure up to 15 or more, that would make a huge difference for Newcastle United. The club have lacked an out-and-out goal scorer for too long.
Ayoze Perez is a very talented footballer, with great control and a pleasing technique. However, all too often he drifts in and out of games and had a tendency to often make very little impact on a game. With players the calibre of Jonjo Shelvey playing passes into the front man, he has no excuse for not scoring more goals.
This is a major season for Perez to prove his worth to Newcastle United.
