Annoyingly, for the Newcastle United fans propping up the bar here in the Transfer Tavern, much of the talk amongst them has little do with potential January incomings. While bringing in some new players over the course of the New Year sales is quite clearly crucial, goings on behind the scenes are dominating the chat amongst our resident Geordies.
Indeed, amid Peter Beardsley’s period of leave as the club’s under 23 manager amid allegations of bullying and racist remarks, our punters clad in black and white are saddened to hear a club legend might be involved in such actions. Though a hugely popular figure on Tyneside, such awful behaviour won’t be accepted at the Newcastle faithful, if proven to be true.
With that in mind, reports from the Daily Mail shed an interesting light on the matter. They reveal that Rafa Benitez was ‘advised’ to ‘distance’ the former England international from the first-team set-up at Benton after suggestions he wasn’t the most popular figure behind the scenes.
More is likely to come out about Beardsley in the near future as the turmoil behind the scenes at Newcastle shows no signs of letting up.
