While the Newcastle United fans here in the Transfer Tavern weren’t overly able to enjoy a huge amount of activity during the summer window, life back in the Premier League has been really rather enjoyable. Indeed, sitting in the top half of the table, it’s been a great start.
With talk of a takeover on tongues in Toon, our punters clad in black and white are dreaming of a busier few windows on the near horizon as the Magpies wait for some new investment. Though Rafa Benitez has been working miracles of late, he could do with some more money to spend.
So, reports from the Sun hinting at a transfer target have gone down well today. According to them, Newcastle and West Bromwich Albion are keen on a move for Wolverhampton Wanderers defender, Connor Coady. The 24-year-old has proven a huge part of Wolves’ exciting new Championship team and the defender was particularly impressive against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup.
Reportedly valued at £7m, Coady is understood to have attracted Benitez’s interest with a string of top performances, though Wolves are pushing for promotion right now and certainly have the financial clout to keep their top players.
Defence is one of few areas in the Newcastle squad that doesn’t need a huge amount of work. Though Coady is a good player, perhaps Newcastle would be better served trying to bolster more attacking positions in January.
