Newcastle patrons in the Transfer Tavern are looking ahead to a summer transfer window that is expected to see Rafa Benitez strengthen his side for a Premier League campaign.
The pace-setting Magpies are still top of the Championship with just eight games remaining and seven points clear of falling out of the automatic promotion spots – although second-placed Brighton are just one point behind them.
A return to the top flight at the first time of asking is more than likely and according to The Sun, manager Benitez is eyeing up Swansea City’s talismanic midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson as a big summer addition to ‘spearhead’ Newcastle’s Premier League campaign.
The Iceland international’s form this season has been nothing short of majestic, despite the Welsh outfit lingering near the foot of the table. He’s played a hand in over half of Swansea’s 36 Premier League goals, with eight strikes and eleven assists in 29 appearances.
Its claimed Benitez wants Newcastle’s controversial owner Mike Ashley to stump up around £15million to sign the former Tottenham Hotspur man, whose contract at the Liberty Stadium doesn’t expire for another three years.
The Sun even quote an unnamed source as saying; “Rafa knows he can’t just go out there and buy the biggest names in their first season back – but Gylfi would be a good-value addition to his squad.”
However, patrons in the Transfer Tavern rate Sigurdsson as a rather ambitious target for the Magpies, having reportedly spoken of his desire to join one of Europe’s top clubs.
