Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern have been told not to take it easy, as Rafa Benitez wants them to urge their side to finish the campaign as strongly as possible.
The Magpies are in a strong position to retain their place in the Premier League this season, having managed to turn things around after the festive period impressively. Newcastle will know a victory against an Arsenal side, who will have travelled back from a Europa League tie in Russia, will help to ensure their safety in the top-flight.
However, Benitez has told the locals not to ease on their support, believing the relationship between the fans and players has been key to the way the team have played.
“I don’t want the fans to relax,” he told the Shields Gazette.
“I want them to keep pushing and cheering the team. Hopefully, they will keep enjoying it.
“The relationship between fans and players has been key this year.
“Normally, the team has been going away and the fans can make a difference, but if you have 52,000 at home enjoying the games, and behind the team, then the team can play better.”
While the Magpies may realistically be safe, Benitez’s comments have only delighted our drinkers even further, with many them thinking he will continue to fight until the last whistle of the campaign, further endearing him to the St. James’ Park faithful.
The Newcastle fans in the Tavern will be in full voice on Sunday when they welcome the Gunners to St James’ Park and the punters will be hoping their side can take advantage of the extra preparations they have managed to have for the fixture.
