Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern will be delighted after the weekend’s fixture with Arsenal which saw them take three points and secure their Premier League status.
The Magpies defeated the Gunners 2-1 at St. James’ Park and the locals also managed to get a glimpse of what Islam Slimani could do for them. The Algerian came on as a second-half substitute to make his first appearance for the club since joining on loan from Leicester City.
Punters would have been encouraged by the short cameo he managed to provide, which included being involved in the build-up for the second goal, which proved to be the winner.
Rafa Benitez was pleased with the impact Slimani had made during the game and believes he will continue to impress for the remaining fixtures.
“I think he has the desire. He’s a worker. He wants to impress.” he told the Shields Gazette.
“With him, and after Joselu who was doing a good job as a second striker, and after with Jacob (Murphy), so we had fresh legs and also players that had the ambition and desire to make an impact in the end.
“That helps the team to go out when you’re under pressure or to play in the way that we were playing in the end.”
Desperate for a striker to celebrate, the punters propping up our bar were delighted to see Slimani impress in black and white, hoping goals will soon arrive.
The locals in the Tavern will be pleased with the win that has eased their relegation fears, building a 13-point gap between them and the bottom three, allowing Slimani to have a chance to impress without all the pressure of survival. The punters will be watching with a keen eye to see if he would be worth making a permanent deal in the summer.
