Jamaal Lascelles is widely recognised as one of Newcastle’s most important players by the punters here in the Transfer Tavern.
The 23-year-old proved to be an instrumental figure in the Magpies’ Championship success of 2016/17, and he’s started the new season in inspired form, much to the delight of our resident Geordies.
Lascelles, a former Nottingham Forest defender, scored a terrific goal against Swansea City last weekend and he’s established his status as being a player of tremendous importance to the Toon Army.
The Chronicle Live report that manager Rafa Benitez has revealed that the club is close to securing his contract extension which would be reflective of the great form that the Englishman has produced in the iconic black and white shirt.
Newcastle’s captain is improving, competing in aerial duels and smartly passing the ball, despite some rocky moments for the club since joining back in the summer of 2014. He’s also highly regarded for his measured and composed approach to his defensive responsibilities, as well as his vocal leadership.
“We are working hard on that but I don’t think it will be difficult”, said Benitez in a pre-match press conference.
If Benitez were to lose a player of Lascelles’ experience, potential and pedigree it would be hugely damaging to the Magpies’ hopes of Premier League survival and longevity. If they manage to conclude the deal promptly, it will represent a statement of purposeful intent as they look to re-establish their status as a recognised Premier League team. They must finalise this extension as soon as possible.
