One of the most interesting narratives to have entered the thinking of the Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern has been Rafa Benitez’s reported hunt for a new goalkeeper ahead of next season.
Indeed, while the likes of Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot are popular figures amongst our resident Geordies, the Magpies have been linked with moves for a number of shot stoppers already this summer. The likes of Joe Hart, Willy Caballero and Pepe Reina have been touted as potential targets, though none of those three have been landed.
With that in mind, reports from ESPN have been met with a huge amount of interest. They claim Benitez is keen to land RB Leipzig ‘keeper Peter Gulacsi this summer as he looks to strengthen his options between the posts at St. James’ Park.
The Hungarian international was actually brought to England as a 17-year-0ld by the Spanish coach when he was in charge at Liverpool and went on to enjoy success with Red Bull Salzburg, as well as his current employers.
Having established himself as the No.1 choice with Leipzig, the 27-year-old is believed to be a top target at St. James’ Park heading into the new campaign.
