The weekend loss to Brighton dampened the mood amongst the Newcastle United players in the Transfer Tavern somewhat, after some previous good form.
While three wins on the bounce have certainly given the Magpies some space to breathe, their reversal down on the South Coast only showed just how limited their squad really is.
So, it’s safe to say our punters clad in black and white could do with some cheering up. Which is exactly why reports from the Chronicle have gone down a storm today.
Indeed, they’ve revealed that Rafa Benitez has hinted a new long-term contract for skipper Jamaal Lascelles is close to being completed. The 23-year-old has seriously impressed this season, scoring two winners already, and is thought to be closing in on a new deal on Tyneside.
A hugely popular figure in our bar, the former Nottingham Forest man has been tipped for a potential England call-up by our resident Geordies, so the fact he’s reportedly close to a new deal has gone down a storm in our bar.
It’s imperative that Newcastle get Lascelles tied down long-term. Destined for big things, it’s easy to see a top six Premier League club coming in for him, considering the dearth of English central defenders.
With that in mind, it’s very good news indeed that he’s looking likely to extend.
