The Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern have been locked in discussion in regards to the latest rumour their beloved Magpies have been involved in. Indeed, there’s never a quiet moment on Tyneside, it seems.
Over the course of the weekend, Newcastle were credited with an interest in Atletico Madrid forward Fernando Torres, ahead of the January transfer window. As you can imagine, such a rumour was likely to be divisive, considering Torres’ past.
He was one of the best forwards in Premier League history during his time under Rafa Benitez at Liverpool, though constant injuries have ruined his last few years, ever since he left Anfield. Still, due to the fact the Toon are currently struggling for goals, the 33–year-old would be an interesting prospect.
Whether or not there’s anything in the rumours or not remains to be seen, of course. However, a report from the Chronicle has shared some interesting light on the matter. While they reveal that any deal is unlikely, they do claim that Benitez does keep in contact with former players and that few managers in Europe remain as well-connected as the 57-year-old.
You’d always back Benitez to pull off a transfer surprise, no matter what budget he’s working with. Torres is perhaps a bit past it now, though Rafa proved during the capture of Mikel Merino during the summer, nothing is impossible under his watch.
