As you can imagine, following recent results, the Newcastle United fans here in the Transfer Tavern aren’t exactly in the best of moods right now. Having lost six in seven, the Magpies really are at sixes and sevens, without a real number nine.
For many of the Geordie contingent propping up our bar, the Toon’s survival in the Premier League largely rests on whether or not Mike Ashley releases some funds to spend in the January transfer market. So, imagine the frustration painted across the faces of our punters clad in black and white following reports from the Sun.
Within their piece reporting on Luke Shaw’s apparent desire for a huge Manchester United pay-off, they reveal that Rafa Benitez made a move for the England international last week, as he looks to strengthen his side, only for the club to be put off United’s reported £20m asking price.
Hopefully for Newcastle, there won’t be too much more transfer frustration, with their squad so clearly in need of a boost.
If Newcastle are going to get out of the mess they’re currently in, they need to spend big money, though £20m for someone who has played as little as Shaw in recent seasons sure is pricey. However, Mike Ashley does need to accept that the Magpies are in a dire situation right now when January rolls around.
