Rafa Benitez worked wonders on Tyneside last Season. Despite a lack of investment from the club, the Spaniard guided the club to a very respectable 10th placed finish.
Last season players like Jamaal Lascelles and Jonjo Shelvey seriously impressed for the Magpies on their way to an enjoyable campaign.
Newcastle United have so far brought in South Korean captain Ki Sung-yueng, in typical fashion of owner Mike Ashley of late, the player comes to St James Park on a free transfer. This is not to say the 29-year-old midfielder won’t be a success at Newcastle United, but it does hint at a lack of spending ambition from the club in this window.
Building on last season’s impressive finish is not an easy task for Spaniard Benitez. He will certainly want to bring in his targets if the club has any hope of matching, or bettering, last season’s Premier League finish.
With that in mind, here are two deals Benitez will want in place before pre-season gets underway.
After he left St James Park for South London, there are strong rumours the winger is set to make a return. Palace triggered Townsend’s £13m release clause following the relegation of the club to the Championship. Newcastle United are rumoured to be in for Townsend to the tune of £18m.
Townsend would add pace to the Newcastle side, and a great crossing ability. Despite the frustrations of buying the player back for more than the club sold him for, Benitez will be aware Townsend will be a handy addition to the side.
The 25 Frenchman was on fire in Ligue 1 last season for Nice. Plea netted 16 goals in 34 League appearances, and Newcastle United could badly do with his goal scoring prowess.
Newcastle are thought to be in for the player for £20m, seemingly expensive, but if the striker can net as many goals for Newcastle United as he did for Nice, Plea might turn out to be something of a bargain.
