The Toon Army and The Hammers faithful have been disappointed with their sides’ attacking endeavours so far this season.
West Ham and Newcastle United will be searching for ways to improve their goal-scoring record in the Premier League after the international break. Newcastle have managed just 10 goals from their opening 11 matches whilst West Ham have managed just 1 more from the same number of fixtures.
Considering their sides toothless form so far, both sets of supporters propping up the bar here are delighted to hear reports of a potential January swoop for Villarreal’s talisman Cedric Bakambu.
Bakambu has set La Liga on fire this season. The Congo international has already conjured up a whopping 8 goals from 10 appearances in the Spanish top-flight and currently stands as 3rd top goalscorer in the league, so it is no surprise that Spanish media outlet Marca have linked him with a move to the Premier League this week.
Prior to his move to Villarreal, he played predominantly as a left-winger for Turkish side Bursaspor, but since his move to Spain 2 years ago he has rarely played in anything other than a front-two and he has enjoyed the greatest goal-scoring success of his career in this role.
His predatory instinct and ability to terrorise defenders with a combination of rapid footwork and body strength would undoubtedly give him a great chance of success in the Premier League, but managers of both clubs will need to be willing to adapt their systems to accommodate him.
Bakambu has thrived at The Yellow Submarine when partnered with a fellow striker up-front, and both The Irons and The Magpies should take this factor into deep consideration before splashing the cash.
