Benitez ready to splash some of transfer kitty on man who downed Sunderland

Not long after the swathes of Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern got to celebrate winning the Sky Bet Championship, manager Rafa Benitez confirmed he was staying on in charge.

That news alone sparked a celebration we’ve not seen behind the bar in years, so it’s fair to say the Toon Army are once again on the up.

So, reports from the Northern Echo claiming the Spanish coach had already identified his number one target had excited the Magpies even further.

According to their report, Bournemouth striker Josh King has emerged as a transfer priority, following his recent run of prolific form.

The Norwegian marksman has notched 15 goals in 35 games this season and Benitez is believed to be an admirer, with the Toon boss reportedly recently handed an £80m transfer kitty.

While Bournemouth are now a relatively established Premier League side and would presumably be under no pressure to sell, Newcastle managed to convince Matt Ritchie to leave the south coast for Tyneside last summer following relegation.

King’s a popular figure amongst our local Geordies, having scored the goal that condemned Sunderland to relegation a few weeks ago.
